Westfield Coomera was Scentre Group’s first greenfield development. Completed in 2018, the $470 million development delivered an unrivalled experience in retail, dining, lifestyle and entertainment to the fast-growing corridor on the Gold Coast in South-East Queensland.
Scentre Group approached our specifications representative as they required a durable long-lasting product for usage within a major new shopping centre build in Coomera, Queensland, and had a vision to design an exotic Balinese look to suit the character of the Queensland climate and lifestyle.
Spanning 59,000 square metres (sqm) of indoor-outdoor retail and leisure space, Westfield Coomera offers 140 speciality stores, a two-level dining and entertainment precinct, market-style fresh food, quick eateries and a never-seen-before purpose-built and expertly curated outdoor space for children and families, The Backyard.
The design team had previously experienced difficulty sourcing a product that could withstand the rigour of a public shopping centre and was therefore searching for a solution.
We were informed that our product Natural Chalet Oak Compact was chosen as it was a fresh neutral oak tone and fit with the warm tones that the design team was desiring within the space. The ability to router exposed panels into the doors was also a massive advantage as it allowed the designers’ flexibility to create a unique space.
The project was highly contested during the tender stage, although due to the optimisation of the large compact sheets the Natural Chalet Oak was suitable to be used with minimal joins and wastage, which allowed the trade to utilise a higher quality chemical resistant compact than the competitors’ standard range.
The finished result has allowed Scentre Group and Westfield to achieve the desired finish within these facilities, along with now being able to utilise the same colour across future builds, nationwide.
